Seminar: COLOUR QUALITY OF LED LIGHTING

Ming Ronnier Luo is a Professor at Zhejiang University (China), Leeds University (UK) and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan). He is also the Director of the Division 1 (Colour and Vision) of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). He received his PhD in 1986 at the University of Bradford in the field of colour science. He has over 450 publications in relation to colour, imaging and LED illumination. He is a Fellow of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, and the Society of Dyers and Colourists. He is also the Chief Editor of the Encyclopaedia of Colour Science and Technology to be published by Springer.

Seminar: ASSESSING LIGHTING METRICS

Peter Boyce, PhD, has spent most of his career working in the field of lighting. From 1966-1990 he was a Research Officer at the Electricity Council Research Centre in England. There, he conducted research on visual fatigue, the influence of age on visual performance, visual problems associated with viewing computer screens, hue discrimination, safe lighting for emergency conditions, and security lighting. From 1990–2004 he was Head of Human Factors at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. There, he conducted research on visual performance, visual comfort, circadian effects, emergency lighting, perceptions of safety, and lighting for driving and directed lighting evaluations and product testing. Since 2008 he has been the Technical Editor of the journal “Lighting Research and Technology”. He is a Fellow of both the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the Society of Light and Lighting in the UK. He has received awards from both bodies for his work. He is the author of the classic text “Human Factors in Lighting”, as well as numerous book chapters, papers and articles.

 

Jennifer A. Veitch, PhD, is the Director of CIE Division 3, Interior Environment and Lighting Design. Dr. Veitch is a Principal Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada, where she has led research into lighting effects on health and behaviour for over 20 years, through which she has become known for her research on lighting quality, individual controls, and environmental and job satisfaction in open-plan offices. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, the International Association of Applied Psychology, and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. In 2011 she received the Waldram Gold Pin for Applied Illuminating Engineering from the CIE.

Seminar: ADAPTIVE LIGHTING AND VISIBILITY
Convener: Ron Gibbons, US

  Ron Gibbons, PhD, is the Director of the Center for Infrastructure Based Safety Systems at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI). He is also the Institute’s lead lighting research scientist.  Dr. Gibbons is responsible for lighting- and visibility-associated research projects and projects which consider roadway safety as they relate to lighting.  He is currently the PI on projects investigating the Spectral Effects of new light sources on roadways, the visibility of police vehicles and adaptive lighting of roadways. Dr. Gibbons is also the PI and Project Manager for a safety IDIQ project sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, a subject matter expert for the National Surface Transportation Safety Center of Excellence and it’s a proven project manager.  Gibbons is the author of over 40 published papers on roadway lighting, photometry, and target visibility.  He is the current Director of Division 4 of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and a past president of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

Workshop: CIE ILLUMINANT L (LED): PROS, CONS AND CHALLENGES

Peter Blattner, PhD, has a master‘s degree in physics from the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He worked in 1992 as Young Graduate Trainee at the European Space Agency (ESA) in The Netherlands on the development of a measurement set up for diffractive optical elements. In 1998 he earned his Ph.D in the field of applied optics at University of Neuchâtel. Following a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Institute of Microtechnology he joined the Federal Office of Metrology (METAS) in 2000 where he is currently the head of the optics laboratory. In addition he served as chairman of the Technical Committee of Photometry and Radiometry of the European Association of Metrology Institutes (EURAMET TC-PR ) from 2007 to 2011. He is presently the Director of Division 2 (Measurement of Light and Radiation) at the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE). He chairs CIE TC 2-69 on the characterization and classification of photometers and the technical committee of photometry at Swiss Lighting Society SLG. He is a member of CEN TC 169 WG 7 "photometry".

Seminar: LIGHTING FOR LIFE

Jennifer A. Veitch, PhD, is the Director of CIE Division 3, Interior Environment and Lighting Design. Dr. Veitch is a Principal ResearchOfficer at the National Research Council of Canada, where she has led research into lighting effects on health and behaviour for over20 years, through which she has become known for her research on lighting quality, individual controls, and environmental and jobsatisfaction in open-plan offices. She chaired CIE TC 6-11, which produced the first consensus statement concerning the effects ofocular radiation on physiology and behaviour (CIE 158:2004/2009). She is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, theAmerican Psychological Association, the International Association of Applied Psychology, and the Illuminating Engineering Society ofNorth America. In 2011 she received the Waldram Gold Pin for Applied Illuminating Engineering from the CIE.

 

John O’Hagan, PhD, is Director of CIE Division 6 “Photobiology and Photochemistry”. He heads the Laser and Optical RadiationDosimetry Group at Public Health England. The Group provides advice to the UK Government on issues covering the beneficial and detrimental effects of optical radiation on people. John is also a member of the Scientific Expert Group of the International Commissionon Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, an adviser to the World Health Organization and is a Visiting Fellow at Loughborough University in the UK.

Workshop: COLOUR IMAGING REPRODCUTION FOR 3D PRINTING

Kaida Xiao, PhD, received his PhD from Colour and Imaging Institute, University of Derby, working with Professor Ronnier Luo in colour appearance modelling. He then worked in Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology in Korea, on colour image processing for displays. It was followed by a post at Tru-Colour Ltd., working on display visual colour calibration. After periods at the University of Sheffield, working on colour image reproduction for 3D printing in soft tissue prostheses, he is now a Senior Research Fellow at Department of Psychological Science at the University of Liverpool and a Visiting Professor in the University of Science and Technology Liaoning, China. His research interests are related to 3D colour image reproduction and printing, medical image capture and analysis, colour appearance modelling and image quality enhancement. He has been actively working with CIE since 2006. He is now the Technical Committee Chair for CIE TC 1-92, skin colour database and the Reportership for CIE R8-11, 3D colour image reproduction for 3D printing.
